A Look Inside

See why our authentic, approachable DIY equipment is second to none

Our History

Where it all Began

Hairball Audio was formed in 2007 while I was building a small project studio in my home.  I’d spent some time in large recording studios and was blown away by how great music could sound when recorded well, with quality equipment.   Quickly I began to realize that most classic gear was not affordable and the less expensive Chinese knocks-offs lacked sonic impact. These pieces of equipment were poorly conceived, poorly made, and unreliable.

Having had experience building guitar pedals, I began to explore the growing world of DIY audio and was immediately hooked. DIY is, to me, an extremely empowering activity that allowed me to take ownership of my gear.  I build it, I can tweak it, and most importantly I can repair it.  Suddenly, that mystery compressor is something you’ve built and modified to work exactly as you wanted.

All components used in our kits are selected for sound and reliability.  We never sacrifice component selection to cut corners.

  • All enclosures and faceplates are made in Seattle
  • Our custom transformers are made in the USA
  • Pre-assembled op-amps are manufactured in Seattle
  • Pre-assembled units are hand built and tested at Hairball Audio.

The current DIY trend represents an exciting new time with limitless possibilities.   We’re proud to be part of a revolution in which studio owners are building new skills while continuing to hone their craft.  We look forward to growing as a company and helping audio engineers grow as professionals.
